Dos & Don’ts

The blue flag

The blue flag is a globally valid and recognised environmental symbol which is awarded to beaches and coasts based on their environmental management, their water quality etc. Only beaches that comply with these high standards receive this symbol which verifies their outstanding water quality and cleanliness. The Vela Plaža beach at Baška on the island Krk has been awarded the blue flag since 1999, and also the Rupa beach near Malinska convinces through its high quality and is especially popular with families, as the beach has an extremely shallow slope into the sea.

Traffic regulations

In Croatia, special regulations apply for young drivers. Drivers under 25 years must drive 10 km/h slower than the permitted speed limit. Therefore, out of town, a speed limit of 80 instead of 90 km/h applies for them, on expressways 100 instead of 110 km/h and on motorways 120 instead of 130 km/h. This regulation normally only applies for Croatian citizens, nevertheless all young drivers should observe it. Another special regulation is daytime driving with lights: from the last Sunday in October to the last Sunday in March, it is stipulated that you must drive with daytime lights on all roads, both out of town and in the town itself This obligation applies the whole year round for motorcyclists. One permanent item in your travel luggage must always be a set of replacement bulbs. This applies for vehicles with xenon or neon lamps, in the case of cars with LEDs, this only applies only for brakes and indicators. All bike enthusiasts under 16 years of age must wear a helmet.

Dogs on the beach

Dogs are not permitted on official beaches throughout Croatia, nevertheless, numerous designated “beaches for dogs” or
“wild beaches” are suitable for an excursion with your dog. These are marked with their own flag featuring dog bones Dogs are not officially permitted but normally tolerated in isolated bays, the so-called “wild beaches” – however the tolerance and safety of other holidaymakers must always be ensured.

On the island of Krk, for example, you can find Redagara, the official beach for dogs in the town of Krk, or further south near Baška, at the western edge
of Vela Plaža, in the suburb of Zarok.
